Plants

Flora - Alphabetical

Ambrosia Bloom :
Alchemic Property: Roccia
Region Found: Speldenhi
The flowers of this blossoming plant have thick, hearty petals, curled inward for much of their length before blooming out, almost like a teacup on a stem. Inside this delicate package resides a sweet-smelling nectar, clinging to bushy pistils on the flower. While the leaves are somewhat prized for their properties in cleaning and polishing fine porcelain and silverware, the nectar of the ambrosiabloom is the true prize.

Folk tales often credit ambrosia nectar for miraculous cures, while other stories claim that it can bring longevity and youth or even stave off death for a time. Of course, that may be simply because the nectar is sweeter than sweet, with a soft floral note that adds a delectable finish to any jam or jelly. Unfortunately, the desire for this fine nectar has driven the ambrosiabloom nearly to extinction, and what few remaining flowers are left are found deep in the uncharted corners of the world. Some say that the gods themselves hid the remaining ambrosiabloom flowers, for the nectar is the key to obtaining divinity for oneself… but the only ones who know for sure are the gods, and any who go asking do not get a chance to share their folly with the rest of the world.

Ancestor's Tears :
Alchemic Property: Roccia
Region Found: Speldenhi
This tree is sometimes mistaken for a Weeping Willow. The trees look much similar with the same relatively short trunk and broad, open, irregular crown of drooping branches. The bark is grayish-brown deeply and coarsely fissured. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, alternate, finely saw-toothed, long-pointed tips.

The largest difference between the Weeping Willow and the Ancestor’s Tears trees are that in the case of the Ancestor’s Tears, the leaves hang from the leafstalk all the way to the ground, are more like slender and the texture of them is more like metal than plant. These trees have razor sharp edges on their leaves and as the wind blows any creature or person standing in the leaves will find themselves sliced viciously. There are tales of these trees killing unwary children that wander into their drooping foliage oblivious of the tree’s true nature.

The flowers can be eaten fresh and give the mouth, the breath a fragrant smell.

Centaurea Thistle:

Their leaves, spiny in some species, are usually deeply divided into elongated lobes at least in the plants' lower part, becoming entire towards the top. The "flowers" are diverse in colour, ranging from intense blues, reds and yellows to any mixture of these and lighter shades towards white.

Moonflower:
Alchemic Property: Roccia
Region Found: Mordanthas
These small flowers are found wild in woods and fields, and have frequently been grown for domestic gardens. There are several varieties of Moon Flower but they all share the same characteristic- dark green foliage and white blossoms that only bloom at night. Fragrance varies from mild honey scents to heavy sweet scents. Typically flowers are three to five inches but variations have been observed. Flowering time is typically spring through fall, with blooms opening at dusk and closing at dawn.

Because of its response to the moon it is used as a bloom that is much cherished by the temples of Aleyiasa. The plant is never kept within the temple and always left to bloom outdoors, past experience finding that the plant wilts and dies when confined inside a pot or in a building planter, but some transplants can be found outside of temples. In the city of Sobenical and in areas where Aleyiasa is worshipped the plant is protected, because of its rarity and its strange penchant to grow only in Mordanthas and near to existing places of worship, it is a simple prospect to protect it.

Though the physical embodiment of Aleyiasa has not been seen as the deities of Omen have been returning in flesh, there have been stories of the goddess appearing in places where these flowers bloom heavily. The uses of the Moonflower mirror some of the ethics of the goddess, the scent the flowers when they bloom brings relief to those in pain, when the fallen blooms are gathered and boiled the tincture that results brings to the drinker a sense of calm and is commonly used by warriors, paladins and knights that worship the goddess to steel themselves before battle.

This species of grass can have its seeds entangled in sheep's hair while they are feeding, and once entangled it often works its way into the animal's skin. Bloodtip seedpods are rarer and also carry potent healing properties. The trees produce seedpods only every third year.
The Silvah Birch has the additional use of having bark that is thin and paper, can be unwound from the trunks of the trees. The bark is shredded, soaked and pulped, pressed and dried and the ensuing parchment that is created is strong, fire resistant though with time and exposure it will burn.
